WHAT DOES "SALARY IS COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE" REALLY MEAN?

Every wonder what “Salary is commensurate with experience means?”

Variants include: “competitive salary based on experience,” and “we offer a competitive compensation and benefits package.”

By not stating a level of compensation, the business has greater flexibility to offer what it feels is most appropriate. This strategy gives the business the most negotiating power when hiring new employees, allowing them to offer a higher compensation to the “ideal” candidate compared to less experienced candidates.

If an employer specifies salary commensurate with experience, prepare to negotiate your salary if you’re offered the job! Since the wage isn’t set in stone, you have some wiggle room and can potentially sway the employer's decision in your favor. Research the typical salary range for the position. Easy to find on Glassdoor and related sites to evaluate what amount you need to make it worthwhile to accept the job. Also, identify your strengths and distinguishing characteristics – what sets you apart. Focus on these during the interview to demonstrate that you’re qualified and to boost your chances of landing an offer that feels right for you.

Also, consider that when it comes to compensation, there’s more to consider than just base salary; hence, the term base pay.  Consider the Total Compensation: base pay, plus benefits, raises, stock options and bonuses. For many occupations, there are additional forms of compensation like overtime, on-call pay, pay for special projects and investment options.

Do your research to the best of your ability and be clear about your Value Proposition. If you’re not, who will be?

Here’s to you, and Carry On!
